Let’s Do This!

Jun 20, 2016 | Entrepreneurship

Anxious to get going and 15 minutes after getting started, we registered a new Not-For-Profit. Done online with a few clicks (and $230!) suddenly Ottawa had a new organization. Definitely not as painful as I had thought, and with some paperwork from an existing company to use as a baseline, adding the rules and structure of the organization went pretty smoothly. With the the easy part taken care of, now we needed to figure what to do.

Over the next week, we contemplated what topics we should cover and who to have speak. Summer holiday season was approaching fast and finding enough people who weren’t away on travel for work or relaxing at the cottage might be tough. Perhaps we should start small and find a little place where we could get our feet wet. Perhaps we should wait until September. That way we have more time to get the word out and hope more people show up. But sitting around planning and organizing something for 3 months doesn’t sound like much fun. Besides, as mentioned in the last post, Muhammad Ali said that it’s lack of faith that makes people afraid, and why shouldn’t we have faith we can get this done.

But there’s lots to decide on, arrange, coordinate … can we really organize an event in 6 weeks?

Those of you old enough might remember Channeling our best Stuart Smalley “We’re good enough. We’re smart enough and doggone it, people like us!”. So throwing caution to the wind, we picked a date and said “Let’s do this!”

Turns out that decision making isn’t as tough as you make it out to be. Lean towards what your intuition and gut tells you, confirm with a few trusted souls and then make it happen. I mean, picking a topic that entrepreneurs would be interested in is easy, there are just so many – so throw a dart at a list of ideas and voila, you’ve got your selection. The date – well, third Wednesday of each month sounds good. And so went the decisions for the venue, menu and so many other items – we believed our intuition would be of quality items, so why worry.

Time to announce The Breakfast Startup to the world and make it happen.

“The only thing we have to fear is fear itself — nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance.”
– Franklin D. Roosevelt –
